Recent data tells us that more than 2.7 million children in the US have an incarcerated parent—that’s one in 28 children. One in 9 African American children, one in 28 Hispanic children, and one in 57 White children in the US have an incarcerated parent; roughly half are under 10 years old. Approximately 10 million children have experienced parental incarceration at some point in their lives.
What are we, as a society, currently doing about it? How have we served this population of students and their families? At PSPI, our experience is that all we have done for these families so far is offer hope—a tool, not an action. Our team takes actionable steps to address the challenges of families experiencing incarceration.
It is our intent to move beyond hope and offer a program that will allow students, parents, and the family as a whole to engage in a process that will offer support during parental incarceration.
